Self Catering Accommodation

Just 1 More Cast Cottages
At 16 Taute Street, is a complex of 4 cottages accommodating up to 14 people. Just 1 More Cast Cottages has a country, oregon pine, cottagey feel, with thatched and tin roofing. Each cottage is named after fishing flies: Duckworths Dargle Delight (sleeps 6), Wickhams Fancy (sleeps family of 4), Blue Dunn (sleeps 2) and Cats Whisker Cottage (sleeps 2).

Machado House
Machado House at 18 Taute Street is an old Victorian style house divided into 3 separate units , and sleeps up to 10 people. Units take their names from the history of the area: BaKoni House (sleeps 4), named after the early peoples of the region, Geluk House (sleeps 2) named after the farm on which Machadodorp was developed, and Entokozweni House (sleeps 4), meaning “the happy place”, the new name for Machadodorp, finalized only in 2009. Each unit is self contained with its own kitchen and bathroom with both shower and Victorian bath. Machado House is furnished in the old Victorian elegance of the late 18th century, and there is a lovely communal veranda for sundowners.

Attractions and Activities

Relax in the quaint Old World village atmosphere. On arrival in Machadodorp you can just park your car and walk to the shops, park, pubs and places of interest. The beautiful Dutch Reformed Church is the most prominent place of interest, designed by well known architect Gerard Moerdyk & built in 1927/28. Machadodorp railway station was declared seat of SA government in 1900 under President Paul Kruger.

There is an apartheid bridge over the railway line, constructed under the apartheid government so that in the past black & white people could cross the bridge separately. The village grave yard features graves of soldiers from the SA Wars, both Boer & British soldiers from a variety of regiments – Afrikaaners protecting their families, farms and way of life, and British on an adventure to fight for the British Empire, never to returned. Swedish Missionary Ernst Anderson’s grave is also found in the Machado grave yard and the mission Church he built for the township people can be seen in one of the gardens in Voortrekker Street, between Tobias & Eind Streets, across the railway line and just beyond the Police Station. He and his wife and children lived & worked as missionaries in Machadodorp during the 1920s.

Alternatively, a short drive from Machadodorp takes one into the Mpumalanga Highlands countryside, with many wonderful outdoor activities: walking & hiking trails in the Skurweberg, scenic drives, horse riding, excellent fly fishing, rock climbing, and interesting and mysterious stone circles scattered over the hill tops, thought to be constructed by iron age residents involved in farming and or the slave trade.

A guided visit to the township of Emthonjeni, where the majority of black people of Machadodorp live, will also enlighten visitors to Mpumalanga of the vibrant township life style of spaza and tuck shops, hair braiding studios, shebeens, crèches & community upliftment projects. A 3 to 5 day stay over in Machadodorp can considerably complement and enrich a planned visit to the Kruger Park.

Location

Machadodorp lies in the centre of the Mpumalanga Highlands, just off the N4 Maputo Corridor which links Botswana to Mozambique and Swaziland through Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Machadodorp, or Entokozweni (new name) is situated 250km from Johannesburg and OR Tambo airport, a drive of approximately 2.5hours, and 120km from Nelspruit and the Kruger Park, making it a good half way stop over for travelers visiting the Kruger Park, Mozambique and Swaziland.

Martha, Suzan, December, Idah and Trina look forward to welcoming you to Absolute Leisure Cottages.
