DESCRIPTION:
Our club is a not-for-profit organisation that is in excess of 60 years old. The original Club Members fished in the Municipal waters of Machadodorp, but were forced to move to a new venue on the R36, Carolina Road, 6 kms from Machadodorp. The club consists of Members who are keen Fly Fishers and we welcome a constant stream of visitors to our new venue.
The club runs a hatchery, nearby, which supplies Rainbow and Golden Trout for our dams. Hatchery Manager, Bok Joubert, milks the trout each year and then grows the hatchlings to ensure that we have a good supply of Trout to give us excellent year-round fishing. The dams are usually stocked once a week, on a Friday. A nearby river is also stocked for special occasions, like the yearly “River Bash” competition.
Self Catering Accommodation
Camping facilities
Camping and caravanning sites are charged per person per day. Many of the sites are electrified and have taps. Basic ablution facilities, with hot and cold water, showers and a bath for the ladies, are available in the ablution block. Braai drums will be provided by the club and wood is available for purchase at the shop. Dish washing basins and a fish gutting and cleaning facility is also provided.
The approach to the Fishing Club is on a dirt road, with cattle grids, so any caravans and cars that are being brought in to the camping site need to be able to navigate a dirt road. 4x4’s and trailers will easily cope with the conditions, in all weathers.
Children are welcome, but parents need to be aware that there is water nearby. A mini “farm” is available with rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks and chickens.
Fishing
Dams
Two dams are available for fishing, one very large and one smaller dam. The large dam has built fishing “peninsulas” to allow beginners to fish without worrying about hooking up on grasses, trees or undergrowth. The edges of the dams have some areas of grass which are excellent for practising casting techniques.
Club House
The Club House boasts Bar facilities and acts as a social gathering area. The office and tackle shop are located in the Club House, along with the TV and large fire-place for those chilly winter nights.
Tackle Shop
Basic tackle is for sale, along with flies. Beginners who don’t wish to buy tackle are welcome to rent it, to try out their luck.
Fishing Competitions
Fishing competitions are held at least four times a year, with loads of prizes to be won for all!
Activities and Attractions
Hiking and Mountain biking are possible in the area. There is an incredibly rich variety of birds in the area. Birders will be delighted to see Fish Eagles, Spoonbills, various raptors and owls, Kingfishers and Cormorants and other constant visitors to the dams and camping areas.
Rules and Regulations
Rules and regulations of the fishing club are strictly enforced. Only fly fishing is permitted. We only allow a bag limit of two fish per fishing permit per day, but unlimited catch and release is allowed unless you have taken your two fish bag. Barbless hooks and only two hooks per rod are allowed.
This remains the most economical fly fishing venue in the country. Set in a rustic, rough and ready environment, it is a wonderful escape from the hum-drum of city life. The views are amazing and the area is teaming with bird life, otters and other wildlife.
